The problem
Surgical teams are asked to complete safety checklists and capture perioperative data during the exact moments they can least afford to look away. In operating rooms where connectivity is unreliable, the tools meant to help become another thing that fails mid-procedure — so checklists get back-filled from memory and the data that would make surgery safer never gets captured.
What I did
- Sat with clinicians to map the real WHO Surgical Safety Checklist flow — sign-in, time-out, sign-out — against what actually happens in theatre, and where the paper version quietly breaks down.
- Framed the product around structured capture that survives a dropped connection, rather than a cloud-first tool that assumes the network holds.
- Worked with engineering to scope a pilot-ready MVP: what must be in the first release to be clinically useful, and what is honestly a phase two.
- Translated clinical workflow constraints into delivery sequencing, so the build order matched the order theatre staff would actually adopt it.
Outcome
A pilot-ready MVP scoped with clinicians and engineering, built around reducing documentation burden rather than adding to it.
